Conference Venue

Viana do Castelo

The 3rd edition of the International Conference WASTES: Solutions, Treatments and Opportunities will take place in Viana do Castelo, a beautiful city surrounded by green mountains, the serenity of the Lima River and the intense blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

The municipality of Viana do Castelo has a total resident population of about 91000 inhabitants distributed by an area of 314 km2 and is the capital of its own namesake district.

Historically, Viana do Castelo was inhabited since the Paleolithic. It would receive Carta de Foral in 1258, granted by king Afonso III, being named Viana da Foz do Lima. The village was involved in the Discoveries dynamics, benefiting from an intensification of the commercial activity. It became the city of Viana do Castelo in 1848, by decree of Queen Maria II.

Nowadays, in the city, which grew along the Lima River, different art styles can be observed: Renaissance, Manueline, Baroque and Art Deco. In the urban area, the historic center, which forms a rectangle delimited by the remains of ancient walls, stands out. Here, small alleys intersect with major arteries facing the Lima River, highlighting the old Igreja Matriz (cathedral since 1977) in gothic style, dating back to the 15th century, the Capela da Misericórdia (Chapel of Mercy) (16th century), the Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls), and the building of the old Town Hall, at the Republic Square (formerly the Queen's Square), with a fountain in granite, with a double basin and tank.

The city also offers: an efficient urban transport network (which includes small electric buses circulating on the streets of the medieval hull, discouraging the use of private cars and promoting environmental quality); a good hotel capacity, which is growing rapidly; a set of modern cultural venues - theaters, cinemas, library, museums - providing conditions for cultural enrichment for both residents and visitors.

Viana do Castelo is specially known for being the capital of Portuguese folklore. In fact, the unparalleled richness of vianesa ethnography, the originality and functionality of its handicrafts, with special emphasis on ceramics and embroidery, the assiduous and qualified cultural entertainment are also attributes that make Viana do Castelo an extremely attractive city for all aspects of tourism.

The conference will take place in the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo/Instituto Superior Politécnico de Viana do Castelo, Avenida do Atlântico, 4900-348 Viana do Castelo/Portugal; GPS [Lat.: 41,70 ; Long.: -8,82 ].
